How to Choose the Right Circuit Breaker for Your Home or Factory

Choosing the right circuit breaker protects your equipment, your building, and the people in it. With so many types — MCB, MCCB, ACB, RCBO — it can be confusing. This guide breaks it down.
1. Know your load
Start by calculating the total current your circuit will carry. The breaker's rated current (in Amps) should be slightly above your normal running load but below the cable's safe capacity.
2. Pick the right breaking capacity
Breaking capacity (kA) is how much fault current the breaker can safely interrupt. Homes typically need 6kA, while industrial panels often require 10kA or more.
3. Match the pole count
- 1 Pole — single-phase lighting and small circuits
- 2 Pole — single-phase with neutral isolation
- 3 / 4 Pole — three-phase motors and main distribution
4. Buy genuine
Always choose certified breakers from trusted brands like Chint, Himel, CNC and Schneider Electric. Counterfeit breakers can fail to trip during a fault.
